Awaodori Promotion Association

Like the flow from "one of three great rivers of Japan", the Yoshino River, Awa Odori dance is a world-class traditional art form from Tokushima that has been danced for over 430 years. Established in 1955, the Awaodori Promotion Association aims to preserve and pass down Awa Odori dance, a traditional and valuable part of Tokushima culture. The organisation continues to pass down the traditional skills and spirit of Awa Odori, whilst respecting the traditional style of Awa Odori and matching the demands of the current generation. Today, 15 famous dance groups (known as ren), with a total of over 1,600 dancers, come together and unite their hearts as one for the grand finale, the "Sou Odori", which has become synonymous with Awa Odori dance. All throughout year, the dance groups perform at various places in Japan, and have numerous performances overseas helping spread Japanese culture to the rest of the world.
